15 Cancer treatments and cancer research related vocabulary terms
Hi, my name is Karine Alhoche. I live in Montreal, Quebec. I have been studying Health Sciences for 1 year at Ahuntsic College and now entering my second year. My field of study is biology. This glossary that I have made could be useful for the students already studying that field or new students. It can also help non-Health Science focused students understand a little bit more about cancer. This glossary is filled with words related to cancer research and cancer treatments, and it is commonly used in this field. This glossary is really focused on that horrible disease, and I chose these words because their use is not very familiar to non-experts. By learning the meaning of those words you could learn a lot about biology and cancer cells.
angiogenesis
noun
The development of new blood vessels.
Example: The doctor told me that the formation of new blood vessels my body is called an angiogenesis.

benign
adjective
(of a disease) not harmful in effect.
Example: I have a tumor but thankfully it is benign.

biopsy
noun
An examination of tissue removed from a living body to discover the presence, cause, or extent of a disease.
Example: I had a bone marrow biopsy.

A disease caused by an uncontrolled division of abnormal cells in a part of the body.
Example: I have been diagnosed with cancer.

cartilage
noun
Firm, whitish, flexible connective tissue found in various forms in the larynx and respiratory tract, in structures such as the external ear, and in the articulating surfaces of joints. It is more widespread in the infant skeleton, being replaced by bone during a growth.
Example: His knees failed and the cartilages were removed.

Abnormality or impairment in the regulation of a metabolic, physiological, or psychological process.
Example: Family dysfunction may contribute to emotional dysregulation.

A disease or period of sickness affecting the body or mind.
Example: My sister suffers from a mental illness.

Example: Yellow nail syndrome, caused by abnormal lymph drainage.

The development of secondary malignant growths at a distance from a primary site of cancer.
Example: Cancer is a collection of diseases with the common features of uncontrolled cell growth followed by a metastasis to surrounding tissues.
